The β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin fractions fractionated by the Method I-a and II-a of Armstrong et al. were purified by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100. Further purification was effected on DEAE-Sephadex A-50 ion-exchange chromatography at pH 6.3. β-Lactoglobulin could be separated into two protein peaks by the DEAE-Sephadex column chromatography. Amino acid analyses and Cellogel electrophoreses indicated that these protein peaks correspond to A and B variants of β-lactoglobulin, respectively. On the othe hand, α-lactalbumin exhibited the complex behaviour on the DEAE-Sephadex chromatography.
