内容記述 1. This study is concerned with the effects of the combination of reward and punishment in instrumental conditioning, using Crowder-box, which is a type of Skinner-box. Two experiments were done in this study. 2. In experiment one, the resistance to extinction of Group I given 100% positive reinforcement was significantly different from that of Group II given 70% reward and 30% punishment at the 1% level of significance. That is, the resistance to extinction was stronger for Group II. 3. In experiment two, the resistance to extinction of Group III given 70% partial reinforcement and that of Group IV given 70% positive, 15% negative and 15% non-reinforcement were compared and no significant difference was found. 4. The comparison of the result of experiment one to that of experiment two showed the following : a. The resistance to extinction of Group III was significantly greater than that of Group I at the 5% level of significance. b. The resistance to extinction of Group IV was significantly greater than that of Group I at the 1% level of significance. c. There was no significant difference in terms of resistance to extinction among Groups II, III pnd IV. 5. The observations of the effects of the combination of reward and punishment on the resistance to extinction tend to contradict Hull's idea of using resistance extinction as a criterion of learning or habit strength. 6. As the possible explanation for the strengthened effects on the resistance to extinction by the combination of reward and punishment, the following will be considered : a Mowrer's theory, which may maintain that conditioning through fear and hope are different in their ways of extinction, and when they are combined the stronger and irregular resistance to extinction would appear, can be applied. b. The experimenter observes the tendency of experimental neurosis in the resistance to extinction in the instrumental learning situation; therefore the rigidity of adjustment is considered in extinction.
